Designing a Sustainability Platform for Carbon & Methane Emissions

Tracking carbon and methane emissions is a critical challenge for companies committed to sustainability. Many struggle with fragmented data, complex reporting requirements, and a lack of real-time insights. (Because who doesn’t love a good Excel nightmare, right?)

Our goal was to design a digital solution that simplifies emissions tracking, automates reporting, and enables data-driven decision-making for sustainability teams—so they can finally stop playing detective with scattered spreadsheets.

Companies participating in OGMP (Oil & Gas Methane Partnership) and GHG (Greenhouse Gas) reporting programs face:

Scattered DataNo single source of truth for emissions data (a.k.a. the "where did we save that file again?" problem)

Complex Compliance Needs – Different reporting requirements for GHG and OGMP (because why have one standard when you can have five?)

Limited Visibility – Difficulty understanding emissions at different levels (facility, site, asset—just pick one already!)

💡 How might we create a platform that

✅ Provides real-time emissions insights (so users don’t have to channel their inner Sherlock Holmes)

✅ Automates data extrapolation for missing values (because making up numbers isn’t a viable strategy)

UX Strategy & Research Approach

UX Strategy & Research Approach

🔹 Interviewed sustainability officers & environmental engineers (who confirmed our suspicions: reporting is a mess)

🔹 Analyzed current pain points in emissions tracking & reporting (spoiler: there were many)

🔹 Mapped out user journeys to identify friction points (turns out, everything was a friction point)

Key Insight from research

Key Insight from research

📌 Users Need a Multi-Level View
— High-level carbon footprint dashboards
— Drill-down capability to facility, site, and equipment-level data

📌 Compliance is Complex
— OGMP focuses on methane, while GHG covers all emissions
— Need for auto-populated forms & validation checks (because nobody wants to re-enter the same data 10 times)

📌 Missing Data Creates Gaps
— Some facilities lack direct emissions data
AI-powered extrapolation can solve this (yes, we made AI do the hard work)

Solution overview

Solution overview

We structured the platform into four key modules:

We structured the platform into four key modules:

Module 1: Carbon Emission Dashboard

Module 1: Carbon Emission Dashboard

🔹 Problem

Sustainability managers needed a centralized dashboard to track Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions across their organization.

🔹 Solution

We designed a real-time emissions dashboard with:

Interactive charts to compare yearly emissions
Filters by scope – View direct, indirect, and value-chain emissions
Drill-down functionality – From total emissions → facilities → equipment

🔹 Impact

40% faster analysis time
✔ Increased user engagement with intuitive data visualization

Module 2: Methane Emission Tracking

Module 2: Methane Emission Tracking

🔹 Problem

Methane emissions need to be monitored at Source level as well as site level, following OGMP standards. Users also needed interactive maps to visualize methane leaks.

🔹 Solution

We designed a multi-level navigation for methane tracking:

Map-based UI – Interactive facility-level insights
Drill-down from assets → sites → equipment
L3 vs. L4 comparison to measure detection vs. estimation

🔹 Impact

20% faster leak detection
✔ Improved compliance with OGMP reporting guidelines

Module 3: Automated Reporting (GHG & OGMP)

Module 3: Automated Reporting (GHG & OGMP)

🔹 Problem

Companies spend weeks preparing compliance reports manually. (Weeks! No exaggeration.)

🔹 Solution

We built a reporting module with:

Auto-filled GHG & OGMP reports (because manual entry is so last century)
Error validation & missing data alerts
Multi-format export (PDF, CSV, API – you name it)

🔹 Impact

Reporting time reduced from weeks to hours
98% data accuracy (finally, numbers we can trust)

Module 4: Data Extrapolation

Module 4: Data Extrapolation

🔹 Problem

Some facilities lack direct emissions data, leading to gaps in reporting.

🔹 Solution

We implemented an AI-powered extrapolation tool:

✅ Suggests estimated emissions based on similar facilities
✅ Users can review & approve extrapolated data

🔹 Impact

100% data coverage
✔ Improved regulatory compliance

Final Results & Learnings

Final Results & Learnings

30% reduction in reporting time

40% faster decision-making with real-time dashboards

✅ Higher engagement with an intuitive UX

🎯 Key UX Takeaways

Data-heavy doesn’t mean complex – Good UX simplifies workflows

Automation reduces user effort – The less manual work, the better

Interactive visuals drive engagement – Users prefer insights over raw data
